This is good material but it seems to cover a lot more besides managing panic. Perhaps it could be split up later? Hobbes 10:50, 15 October 2012 (EDT)

I wonder, is there a place for me to mention Savescumming techniques? I manipulate Council Request missions to target panicking countries. I am just not sure if it belongs anywhere.--Vallen Chaos Valiant 11:52, 15 October 2012 (EDT)

This page seems to dance around an unconfirmed fact that once a Continent is covered with satellites then it will no longer have abduction missions happen on one of its countries. If this is in fact true, then this would be the biggest piece of info for me on this page and it should be said outright. Mavoc 14:31, 15 October 2012 (EDT)

From my experience, Abductions still happen but only nations without satellite coverage get involved with simultaneous abductions. For example, when I had only two nations with no satellites, these two nations were the only choices when the options came up when normally there should be three. Also note that the true coverage happen not when you launch the satellite, but when the satellite became operational. In a game where all nations are covered, abductions would happen one at a time.--Vallen Chaos Valiant 23:29, 15 October 2012 (EDT)

On Abduction and Panic

This page is way off topic, it needs to be cleaned and split. Abduction missions always(unless Vallen special case) target 3 countries (Normal & Classic) on different continents, so this will result in:
  • +2 Panic in the other two countries attacked.
  • +1 Panic in every other (1-3) country in those two continents.
If Mission sucessful
  • -1 Panic in that country
  • ±0 Panic in the other contries on that continent.
Mission failed
  • Same as to ignore/choose another country.
  • +2 Panic in the other two countries attacked.
  • +1 Panic in every other (1-3) country in those two continents.
This mechanic is unbeatable by itself, so the counter mechanic is satellites (-2 Panic) and Council Missions (can't remember how much or in how may countries). I can't remember having any Abduction missions in countries with satellite cover (not 100% sure). But these countries still suffer from the +1 Panic by adjacency to Abduction (and you have no direct control on how to lower it). --Kokkan 11:18, 21 October 2012 (EDT)
Hmm... What is Vallen special case?
+2 Panic is Classic value, on Impossible its +3 for country that has had unattended abduction.
Abductions CAN happen in covered countries (read below) if you didnt have them covered since previous month. In other words, satellites only start preventing abductions fron the following month after the month they were launched in (do not confuse with the month in which you get "satellite coverage now available" message)
Council mission and terror mission reduces panic across whole continent they happened in (if i'm not mistaken), council by 2, terror depends on civilian score (i believe poor still gives -1 panic). Correct me if i'm wrong.
Inded, you are supposed to put satellites and cover whole continents, otherwise even on Classic you will start losing countries from month 2 onwards (or even month 1 if unlucky). However, if you get very lucky, you can get council/terror/ufo missions in country/continent where you have max panic, and live through month 2, and maybe even 3, and then you can globally reduce panic in month 3/4 by doing alien base. In the latter months, abductions usually only happen once per month, plus you can rush the ending, so it is theoretically possible to complete the game without employing a single satellite and still retain all countries, but that would be very hard to do. Final mission is not very hard, and alien base is adjusted to your tech level or current time i believe (one of these), so you should be able to complete it even with laser weapons and without best armor in the game. So problem to solve is to live with minimal funding (basically living on the gray market) and get enough scientist hours to research all the required topics (xeno-biology, arc thrower, live alien, live outsider, hyperweave beacon, gollop chamber) and build hyperweave beacon and gollop chamber, plus get enough engineers and money to produce at least 1 psi armor.Istrebitel 11:05, 30 October 2012 (EDT)

losing countries with satellites over them

Is it possible to loss a country which is covered by a satellite (Japan had 5 panic with a satellite over it, at the council report it only had 4 panic. (Had had no missions in Asia since I'd last checked it as I launched satellites in 3 other places before the council report. (2 in Europe and 1 in Mexico))) --Ditto51 14:17, 29 October 2012 (EDT)

Yes, you can lose countries with satellite coverage. I lost India a few days ago even after spending my first satellite calming them down. Arrow Quivershaft 15:07, 29 October 2012 (EDT)
There is a setting in the ini file that governs difficulty called "satellite chance to reduce panic" and it says its 100 for easy and normal, 50 for classic and 25 for impossible. I can only guess this means that on impossible, you have a 25% chance for satellite to reduce panic on the continent from 5 to 4 right before council report, and correspondingly on lower difficulties. This would fit your report that country with satellite went from 5 to 4 right on council report. Istrebitel 10:54, 30 October 2012 (EDT)

What is the probability of country NOT defecting when in 5 panic?

Greetings.

Today found out a stupid mechanic (that's another topic) that made me let Japan go into 5 panic right before the end of the month (with no satellites, since i usually take all continents except asia, which i leave open for abductions to continue). I'm playing Classic Ironman, however starting with month 3 I switch to Impossible. So yeah, in the end of month 4, on Impossible (was Classic before) difficulty, i had one country on 5 panic and it didnt leave council! I got A rating and Japan remained there, still being red. Before, at any difficulty, in month 1 or 2 having country in red always meant it will leave council. I tried it like 10 or 15 times.

What is the chance for country on 5 panic not to leave, anyone knows? Istrebitel 10:46, 30 October 2012 (EDT)

Abductions in countries covered with satellites

I can pretty much confirm that the only way for abductions to happen in countries covered by satellites is if satellite was deployed in the current month. I never had this happen to me, until yesterday i messed up and didnt have satellites ready in time for month 3, so at the beginning of month 4 I had NA, SA, Asia uncovered. I immediately covered NA and SA, but still got abductions in Brazil, Canada etc.

This happened both for the first and second abduction in that month, so I doubt that it is related to abduction ufo sneaking in right before i got satellite coverage (sinse second abduction happened very late in the month, and abduction ufos appear only several days before the abduction happens, which you cannot normally see however because they are hidden in the unmodded game).

It seems that the game not only locks dates of abductions (as it does for all other events ) at the beginning of the month, but also locks down list of countries that can have abductions happen in them at the same time. Putting your satellites out during the month will have no effect on wether or not an Abduction can happen in the country covered. Istrebitel 10:51, 30 October 2012 (EDT)
