The Advent Purifier is a standard trooper variant that is kitted with a very unique loadout being originally designed to combat the lost but now ADVENT are sending out these troopers to combat XCOM.

The Purifier is equipped with a flamethrower, requiring close range but shoots out flame in an outward clone dealing guaranteed damage and burning any units caught in the blast. This is very dangerous as it can result in high damage being dealt on top of the burning status which will disable effectively all actions. They are also equipped with a pistol if the need arises for longer range targets but they aim to get in close range in order to burn their targets. With this equipment, they are more heavily equipped granting them great protection to more safely enter in close range as well as be unaffected by their own flames but this results in weighing them down and being slower than most other units. Additionally, the equipment purifier's carry to use for their flamethrower is also very volatile and prone to cause explosions. Purifiers have a 50% chance to explode upon death and a 100% chance to explode when killed by any explosives so be careful where your soldiers are relative to them. As Purifiers improve, they become tougher and their flamethrowers can pierce through immunities allowing them to deal some damage even if they do not inflict burning.

Tips

  • Like most flankable units, they will ideally try to find reasonable cover whenever flanked. This can be taken advantage of if you want to force enemies to move. Although purifiers do aim for cover still, they will continuously pursue you in order to enter range for the flamethrower so this may not be that effective.
  • While disorienting does not disable the use of their flamethrower, with their already low mobility they are still an effective counter decreasing their mobility even further making it difficult for them to get in close range.
  • Purifiers are equipped with a pistol that does respectable damage. While it may not be high damage, it has decent crit damage so it is still beneficial to stick to cover against them in order to not flank yourself.
  • More advanced Purifiers gain phosphorus which allows them to deal damage through fire immunity. While you are still immune to burning, the damage can still be nonideal and best to avoid engaging in close range or trying to lure in the attack.
  • While purifiers can explode on death, unlike most explosives this does not destroy loot or corpses.
