I don't know what sort of text to put on the Category:Terrain page. Anyone feel inspired?

I for one have yet to touch, make, or link to a "Category" page. However, with a dozen plus Terrains, it might be a good place for it. ---MikeTheRed

Below Moved by Papa Legba from the old Terrain page:

Should each terrain set gets its own page? I could see this page growing very long indeed.

If each description is no bigger than the Farm one, then I don't think seperate pages would be neccessary. It'll be no bigger than the Alien Overview page.

Yeah, I put that one in as a test case. However, I think the terrain pages should be more detailed than that overview. I want to put in a section of notes for that area, and maybe the relevant entries from the TU Usage page. I think terrain is an important enough section that it should be more than a collection of blurbs.

So: seperate pages a-go-go. Thanks for uploading those other terrains. How did you meld together the seperate sections of the X-Com base? --Papa Legba 15:14, 28 December 2005 (PST)

In MapView you can edit the terrain, so I just deleted the walls where they needed to be "halls" and then saved the images.

One other thing, I think if you're going to seperate the pages, then you'll need a prefix or suffix to distinguish them from other articles. For instance, a "Mars" page has already been created, with reference to the real planet, so has "Alien Base Assault" for Alien bases. So maybe if you called the new pages "Terrain - Mars" or something, it would be less messy.

PL, I would've voted with Danial, to have it all in one page, a la Alien Overviews. But we trust in your overall vision Papa, and as usual, effort is 90% of the law on a wiki, lol.

One thing I might ask though is that I think it's a good site structural organizer if you precede page names with "Terrain -", like Danial says, e.g. "Terrain - Farm". Although in one sense it's a parlor game, in another sense, we are trying to keep things organized, and that helps. If you don't mind, could you do that? I see you've already made a dozen terrain pages, now called e.g. Jungle Terrain. Would it be too much trouble to rename them before it goes too far - could you think of it as "humor us"? We'd be quite obliged. You can use some of the tools under Special:Specialpages to make sure you got everything... what's the most relevant tool to see that nothing that got left pointing to nothing, Dead End Pages? I'm new to the enhanced wiki functions.

Anyway. I, for one, focus on things that are for die-hard XCOMies. But it's great to see you posting stuff for the newcomer, and with plenty of pix, to boot, smile. We need tons more of that. Few are as focussed as I am, but tons of people could be XCOM newbies.

It would be cool to see an overall view of terrain difficulty a.k.a. probably something like average walking TUs, average number of un-enterable tiles (building walls, trees), etc. This is a function of the tilesets "randomly" made from MCD sets. Let us know if you want a dump of the MCD data, and I could probably help with analysis, if given some pointers. I don't know exactly how tilesets (10x10 or 20x20) for each battlescape are chosen, but it's easy to see what they are. ---MikeTheRed 23:04, 28 December 2005 (PST)

Yes, a lot of those pages are artifacts from the old naming system. In fact, this page should go away too-- it has been taken over by Category: Terrain - all of which has a consistent naming system.

End of move from old Terrain page. --Papa Legba 09:40, 29 December 2005 (PST)

Time to add tftd terrain

Time to add tftd terrains...

Happy hunting, Tentaculat. You probably know this, but it annoyed the hell out of me: to add something to a category listing, you just include a standard link to the category on the page you want to add. So, to add, say, Suburban Mall to the terrain list, you make the Surburban Mall page, then add (probably in the "see also" section) [[Category:Terrain]]

To link to the Category page without adding that page to the Category listing, you put a leading colon in: [[:Category:Terrain]]
