The Codex is a mysterious mechanical alien that wields unique psionic capabilities.

The Codex is a mysterious being that has some mechanical properties but also wields psionic abilties. They first appear when accomplishing the skulljack objective and then becomes an eligible unit in future missions. A unique characteristic of the codices is that they are vulnerable to some tools that don't normally affect mechanical units such as flashbangs. With that said, they have partial immunity to the stun effect where they will be stunned during your turn and thus have abilties disabled but is cleansed at the start of their turn. The Codex is capable of teleporting to a nearby location which lets them completely bypass many reaction attacks. They are also capable of creating a Psionic Bomb which disables all weapons within the field and then causes a great explosion after a turn which will damage anything within. Codex's most special ability is their ability to Clone, creating a copy when damaged and then teleport to a new location.

Environmental Immunities

Clone
* When damaged, splits into another codex splitting the HP in half between the two. * The codex will teleport to a random location within 6 - 18 tiles from their original location

Teleport
* This ability costs 1-action, is non-turn ending, has a 1-turn cooldown and can be used within 16 tiles.
Teleport to a location within sight and bypasses all reaction attacks 1-turn cooldown.
Psionic Bomb
* This ability disables the weapons of any units within range forcing them to reload.
Open a small psionic rift that disables the weapons of any units caught in its radiius and deals damage to any units that remain in the field after 1-turn. 3-turn cooldown.
Center Mass
*You do one additional point of base damage with your primary weapon, pistols or a sawed-off shotgun.
You do one additional point of base damage when using guns.

Shadowstep

Tips

  • Like most flankable units, they will ideally try to find reasonable cover whenever flanked. This can be taken advantage of if you want to force enemies to move. This may not necessarily be beneficial if you are aiming for them to move against a reaction attack as this can potentially let them clone if it does not kill.
  • While the Codex doesn't deal the most damage they can be very disruptive so the key is to have some counters against their abilities
    • Psionic Bomb disables the primary weapon of the affected unit forcing a reload before use. You can bait the move to effectively waste their turn by grouping up soldiers that do not care for their primary weapon as much or have free reloads. This can also be taken advantage of as it will also disable enemy weapons.
    • Clone makes Codices resilient as not scoring a lethal hit will only create more enemies to kill which means more actions required. With that said, this ability can be disabled like many other abilities by disabling the Codex in some form. The best method is to disorient them as it will persist in their own turn unlike stun while also disabling their Psionic Bomb (if being hit by it is detrimental).
