Displacer /P. W. T.
Displacer/P.W.T. |
This SWS features Pulse Wave weapons for aquatic use. You must manufacture PWT's to keep them fully armed. To fire, seelct a number of 'way points' then click on the launch icon. |

The PWT Displacer leverages off technology developed for the Manta and Pulse Wave Torpedo technology to provide a heavily armored weapons system that can perform long range bombardment with guided torpedoes.
The Displacer has superior armor and agility to the Coelacanth chassis and is armed with a Pulse Wave Torpedo turret. It can move over 40% faster, and is capable of changing elevations underwater or in mid air. The Displacer's armor is stronger and more uniformly distributed. In fact, there is only one weak point -- its underside. Even this weak spot is more resilient than the Coelacanth's front armor.
The PWT launcher provides powerful fire support that is absolutely immune to psionic attack, and carries 8 shots-- more than a trooper can normally carry. In addition, the ammunition is automatically fed, so no rearming is required between attacks.
The Pulse Wave Torpedoes do have numerous drawbacks. The torpedoes will only function underwater. They are less powerful and cost more Zrbite to manufacture than their hand held counterparts for the Disruptor Pulse Launcher. They are not as effective at penetrating alien sub hulls.
Like all SWS's, its larger size precludes it from moving into confined spaces. However, the PWT's guidance system allows it to direct fire to areas otherwise inaccessible to SWS's.
The research requirements of the Displacer mean that, by the time the it becomes available, commanders will typically have access to high-tech armor and alien weapons. As such, the Displacer/P.W.T. is generally a less useful combatant than well-equipped aquanauts. The Displacer unit itself is still, however, a well protected tank that can be used as a wall of armor for aquanauts, and makes for an excellent scout even if it has run out or cannot fire its torpedoes.
This weapons system is used in Terror from the Deep. In UFO: Enemy Unknown, the Hovertank/Launcher is the equivalent.

Notes
- While the Displacer/P.W.T. cannot use its weapon during Base Defence missions, it will still benefit from the bug granting it full ammunition. This can be exploited to create its expensive ammunition out of thin air.
- Due to its thick all-round armour and resistance to explosives, the Displacer/PWT has little to fear from its own weapon. As long as the tank is at least 2 squares away from the centre of the explosion, it will not be damaged.
- The displacer, like all flying units, can avoid melee attacks like those of Calcinites by staying above ground level.
- Unlike the Magnetic Ion Armor, displacers can fly anywhere.
