Cover in UFO: Enemy Unknown

I noticed your mention of "be sure to move your soldiers into cover before the alien turn" in your edit to the Heavy Plasma article. Unfortunately, you seem to have some misunderstandings about how cover works in UFO.

  • The accuracy formula has no explicit provision for cover. Cover helps only inasmuch as shots' calculated trajectories can hit the cover (in the case of the Heavy Plasma, the cover will essentially always be destroyed in one hit by this).
  • Cover that occludes the "ideal" trajectory usually functions both ways, giving you "No Line of Fire!" messages when you try to shoot back.
  • Stepping "out of cover" to shoot at aliens usually provokes reaction fire, because you have to move "sideways" around the cover, whereas the aliens may not have to provoke to get a shot at you due to the mutual surprise rule.

The best way to arrange troops at the end of a turn is not to "put them in cover", but rather to get side-on lines of sight to corners (so that you get reaction fire against aliens before they can attack you). Magic9mushroom (talk) 03:41, 17 August 2015 (EDT)
