ADVENT Trooper

ADVENT Troopers are the most basic ADVENT unit found in XCOM 2, appearing at the beginning of the game and throughout the entire campaign as the basic first-response infantry of ADVENT. Supposedly human, ADVENT troops are actually hybridized with alien DNA, giving them inhuman facial features and orange blood; concealed by their carefully-designed helmets, they pass for human among the civilian population.

Behavior

ADVENT Troopers fulfill the role of cannon-fodder for ADVENT; they have unimpressive stats and are overall easy to kill, but appear in larger numbers. One of the most underlooked threats in XCOM 2, Troopers lack many of the hard-hitting but unreliable special abilities of other ADVENT units and aliens; the vast majority of the time, they will simply fire at an XCOM operative, and in the early game XCOM units can sustain but a handful of shots.

As opposed to the Sectoids of EU2012, ADVENT Troopers receive upgrades as the campaign progresses; they will be upgraded to Advanced Troopers at first, then Elite Troopers. Despite this, you will have enough firepower to usually kill them in one to two shots regardless, sustaining their role as cheap cannon-fodder.

ADVENT Troopers will perform basic tactical movements such as flanking, covering one another, and firing on targets of opportunity. They are notably subjugated to ADVENT Officers; if an Officer marks a target, all nearby Troopers will focus their fire on that specific unit. They will also receive accuracy bonuses from this.

Tactical Analysis

As discussed above, ADVENT Troopers lack the flashy special abilities of most enemy units. As the AI seems to prioritize using these specials when possible, one can usually avoid damage or further problems; this is impossible to do with standard Troopers, as they will usually simply take a pot shot, or Overwatch if their chance to hit is particularly poor. Troopers have a 65 Aim stat, dead average and equivalent to an XCOM Rookie or EU2012 Sectoid. They miss frequently when firing on XCOM operatives in high cover, but despite this still have a decent chance of hitting low-cover operatives; in the early game, where their weapons can kill an XCOM operative in just 2 hits, they are particularly deadly. Despite their futuristic body armor, Troopers are quite fragile; with just 3 HP points, they can be killed instantly by any non-Pistol weapon. Unlike the Sectoids of EU2012, the ADVENT does make steps to rectify this; over the course of the game, Troopers will begin to enjoy armor and weapon upgrades, and will also be issued fragmentation grenades, allowing them to destroy your soldiers' cover. On the official XCOM 2 website, there is a tracker listing the total amount of XCOM deaths and their causes; by far the biggest cause of death is by the gun of a lowly ADVENT Trooper. They may be weak individually, but in the legion of ADVENT, the Trooper is an extremely formidable threat, and should not be underestimated in any way.
