The Dart Gun is a low powered one-handed personal firearm that stores and launches 12 darts. It is not restricted by the environment and will function just as well in and out of water.
The Dart Gun features all of benefits of the X-COM standard issue Pistol used in the first alien war and is the cheapest weapon in the arsenal. The one handed grip allows the use of another item in the other hand without an accuracy penalty on the Dart Gun. It is not accurate but makes up for this with its reasonably fast single-shot attacks.
All these qualities make it a suitable main weapon or side arm for an aquanaut with a specialized role such as a scout, grenadier, medic, heavy weapons specialist, etc.
Despite these benefits, the Dart Gun is the weakest of all the weapons. It is not capable of dealing much damage and often can not penetrate past the armour layer of many enemies. Only enemies with light armour and a near normal resistance to Armour Piercing Damage, such as the Aquatoid and Gillman will be effected by the darts. Even so, they are sufficiently resilient to the darts.
Functionally, the Dart Gun is a reasonably good weapon, but the inability to do any damage to most enemies negates all of its good qualities. From a training standpoint it is an excellent weapon for training firing accuracy and reactions.
This weapon appears in Terror from the Deep. For the UFO: Enemy Unknown equivalent, refer to the Pistol.
