The heavy cruiser is a more powerful ship than the cruiser, larger weapons and propulsion systems boost its power. The Heavy Cruiser is used for resource missions to collect large quantities of minerals and equipment.
Notes
Although the weapons are comparatively powerful, they don't reach very far: you can leisurely empty a full rack of AJAX Torpedoes into such a vessel without fear for return fire.
Contrary to the UFOpaedia description, these craft are found on Alien Interdiction missions (though you have to wonder how dumb the aliens are sending such a poor fighter to do it).
