Long War replaces the Medal system with Officers. Officer ranks are unlocked at the Officer Training School once you have enough total ranks of soldiers in your roster. All officers get the Lead By Example perk, allowing soldiers around them to use their will score instead of their own, and gain additional leadership abilities depending on their rank.
A soldier who has reached at least the rank of Corporal and been on 5 missions can be promoted to be a Lieutenant. When that Lieutenant leads 5 missions and gains a rank they can be promoted to Captain, and so on, gaining a new ability for each rank. Officers do not change class and will continue to level up in their class and gain perks normally.
