A true terror of the deep, the Tasoth are a species of engineered super-soldiers. Tasoth seem to be literally superhuman; they are much faster, stronger, tougher and more accurate than human soldiers. They have a lot of health and a number of defensive bonuses (column 7 of the table), so that they can take a lot of damage. While not quite as tough as Lobster Men, they also lack any glaring weaknesses to certain types of damage. They're arguably the most dangerous alien race encountered during Second Alien War.
However, by the time they appear, it's likely you will have weapons such as the Sonic Cannon to deal with them. Failing that, Sonic Rifles or strong explosives or melee weapons are the best metohod of dealing with them.
Tasoth Squad Leaders have Molecular Control ability, and appear in great numbers. Thankfully, Tasoth Soldiers do not possess M.C. ability, unlike the Ethereal Soldiers of the first war.
Tasoth usually start appearing only in June, however there is a small chance they will launch a Shipping Route assault in early April or May. This can present quite a challenge to any X-Com commander, especially since Gauss weapons or Gas Cannons require many hits to take down a Tasoth.
Aside from running their own missions, Tasoth will man the upper level of Alien Colonies and both levels of an Artefact Site, and will also appear as the mainstay of some Mixed Crew missions.
Capturing a live Tasoth of any rank will allow you to research the M.C. Disruptor, which is necessary if you want your Aquanauts to make M.C. attacks.
NEVER research the Tasoth Commander. There's no reason to - and as of the last patch, they should no longer appear on the research list. They can block the T'Leth research. See The Tasoth Commander Trap for more detail.
A Tasoth is comparable to an Ethereal from Enemy Unknown, though with weaker M.C. abilities and lacking the power of flight. They are, however, significantly more durable than Ethereals.
Notes
The following are some miscellaneous notes on the Tasoth:
- The Tasoth takes 0.4x damage from incendiary weapons, 0.7x damage from Gauss, 0.8x damage from armor-piercing weapons and 0.9x damage from explosives and melee attacks, but also take 1.1x damage from Stun attacks and 1.2x damage from Sonic weapons.
- High Firing Accuracy.
- Average Throwing Accuracy
- Is very fast (very high TUs).
- Very high Health.
- High Energy.
- Very high Reactions.
- Very high Strength.
- High Psi Strength.
- There are no Tasoth Navigators, Technicians or Medics. Tasoth Squad Leaders will be used in their place. There should be no Tasoth Commanders, but even so do occasionally appear in some versions of the game. Whatever you do, DON'T research one.
- The bit about Tasoths "never shrinking from a fight" is one big lie, since they are in fact the most cowardly of all TFTD aliens.
Trivia
Originally the Tasoth had a very different concept, though this was changed later in development for reasons unknown, likely to accommodate the idea behind the Deep One which shares some flavor text. They were originally designed and intended to be surgically / genetically modified humans who had been captured and MC controlled.
