* * * XCOM: Enemy Unknown announced by Firaxis Games * * *
X-COM fans rejoice! Firaxis Games president Steve Martin announced that his company is working on a modern remake of the very first X-COM game.
- As they're self-admitted fans of the 1993 original, they intend to stay true to the franchise in every way instead of making something X-COM in name only.
- It will return the franchise to turn-based tactical combat with real-time management but instead of TUs, soldiers can perform two actions per turn: move and take a non-movement action or move twice.
- Something about a "Classical Mode" setting the difficulty level of the original X-COM.
- NEW - sponsor countries provide a different ratio of money and resources; for example, African sponsors barely give any money but ample amounts of resources (unknown what kind of resources they mean at this point).
- More information in February 2012.
- The game is announced for the end of 2012.
- Screenshots here, more info here.

- The official XCOM site (only a couple of trailers here)
- Some criticism of its change in focus (1, 2), although 2k Marin may be rethinking this
- 2k's XCOM forum, including passionate posts by X-Commies
- Once slated for March 2012 release, it has now slipped to a later date (1, 2).
