In General
Soldiers and MECs mainly gain experience (XP) through completing missions. However, various other sources of experience are possible.
Experience allows soldiers to promote to increased ranks which will increase the number of perks they have and their base stats.
There is no cap to how much experience soldiers can earn on a single mission.
Note: SHIVs do not gain XP.
Sources of Experience
Source | XP |
---|---|
Alien Kill | +5 |
High Level Alien Kill | +10 |
Mission Complete | +100 |
Mission Complete (w/ High Level Alien) | +130 |
Long Mission Complete | +140 |
Long Mission Complete (w/ High Level Alien) | +200 |
No Dead Soldiers on a Mission | +20 |
A High Level Alien bonus will apply to an individual soldier/MEC if that soldier/MEC is a Private, Lance Corporal, or Corporal and sees one of the following enemies during a mission: Outsider, Mechtoid, Sectoid Commander, Muton Elite, Sectopod, or Ethereal.
The following types of missions count as a Long Mission: Landed UFOs, Terror Missions, Alien Base Assaults, and XCOM Base Defenses.
Other factors modify how much experience soldiers gain:
Factor | XP Modification |
---|---|
Officer | +10% all XP per officer rank |
Cognitive Enhancer | x2 all XP |
Show 'Em the Ropes | x2 mission XP to all soldiers in the squad at Sergeant rank or lower |
Tricks of the Trade | +35% mission XP to all soldiers in the squad at Sergeant rank or higher |
1st SHIV (Alive after Mission) | Shares its mission XP evenly to its squad mates |
Experience per Rank
Rank | XP Required |
---|---|
Specialist | 100 |
Lance Corporal | 500 |
Corporal | 1200 |
Sergeant | 2200 |
Tech Sergeant | 3500 |
Gunnery Sergeant | 5100 |
Master Sergeant | 7000 |
Sources of Psi Experience
After Xenopsionics is researched, soldiers will begin accruing 255 Psi XP after each mission (modified by Campaign Length).
This can be doubled if the soldier is wearing a Neuroregulator.
You can see the current Psi XP level and cap in their Barracks profile.
Psi Experience per Rank
Rank | Psi XP Required |

Awakened | 200 |
Adept | 600 |
Corporal | 1200 |
Empath | 2000 |
Psion | 3000 |
Master | 4200 |
