In General
Incursion strength is a measure of the number of aliens that will be sent to each mission. Higher incursion strengths will reward XCOM with a plethora of bonuses but also present more difficult missions.
Incursion strength increases as XCOM performs well and decreases if they perform poorly.
Increasing and Decreasing Incursion Strength
Incursion strength starts at 100% and can be modified as follows:

XCOM successfully completes a mission (except for UFO missions or Alien Base Assaults) | +1% |
A soldier dies with a rank greater than either the number of months passed or 5 (SGT) | -1% |
An Exalt or Abduction mission loss | -5% |
A DLC or council mission loss | -15% |
A Terror Site or XCOM Defense mission loss | -20% |
- A loss applies to any mission where the Skyranger landed and the mission was not a success
- UFO missions and Alien Base Assaults losses do not decrease Incursion Strength
- Incursion Strength is capped between a minimum of 50% and a maximum of 200% and the minimum increases by 5% per month
- Incursion Strength at or above 120% will be denoted with an additional + sign on landed UFO, terror, and abduction missions
Effect of Incursion Strength
The main effect of incursion strength is directly increasing the number of aliens on all non-scripted missions.
Number of Aliens = Base Number * Incursion Strength
However, higher incursion strength also directly modifies many other aspects of a campaign:
- The xp gain of all XCOM soldiers
- The rate of xcom research and xcom engineer production
- The amount of Alloy, Elerium, Weapon Fragments, and most alien artifacts recovered after each mission
- Quick mission bonuses, council missions rewards, terror missions credits, and council request offers
