I EXCLUSIVELY use auto-shots at point blank... remember, any weapon shot can do 0-200%, so those snap shots actually have a SIGNIFICANT chance of failure to kill... for snap and aimed, a weapon power of 100 will fail to kill a 50 health 0 armor normal opponent 25% of the time... Lots of good research into the probabilities has gone on and autoshot often comes out on top.

What auto has going for it is that it allows for a greater number of trials compared to snap or aimed. Even with the lower hit probabilities, more trials == greater chance of succeeding once or even a few times. While testing out a machine pistol in a mod I'm making (which I should make some time to complete - mainly need to complete the battlescape sprites), I found that even 10% accurate attacks would frequently hit their mark on auto (at a fairly long distance). Granted the auto-shot cost on my contraption was 15%, so it got many attempts!

Makes you start thinking if there was a particular reason why there are less auto-shot capable weapons in TFTD! -NKF 04:49, 23 March 2009 (EDT)

The other side to the coin is weapon damage. If your shot goes out and hits, but fails to kill the target, then odds are it hasn't really achieved much at all. Worse yet, a shot that fails to kill may give your opponent a chance to take advantage of reaction fire!

On this basis, I'll usually use auto-shots even at point blank range.
