-: The easiest is to insert a wiki link with the filename prefixed with '''file:''' where you want it to appear. Like this: '''<nowiki>[[file:pic.png]]</nowiki>'''. Throw in the alternate text and formatting options as needed. When you save the article, then click on the link, you'll be able to upload the file.
