Displacer /Sonic
Displacer/Sonic |
Alien technology has redefined the SWS. The ability to utilise Ion Displacers means that SWS's are no longer restricted to the land/seabed. Sonic weaponry gives a real advantage in battle. |

The Sonic Displacer leverages off technology developed for the Manta and vehicle-mounted sonic weapons to provide a heavily armed weapons system that can travel by land, sea and air.
The Displacer has superior armor and agility to the Coelacanth chassis and carries a powerful sonic cannon turret. It can move over 40% faster, and is capable of changing elevations underwater or in mid air. The Displacer's armor is stronger and more uniformly distributed. In fact, there is only one weak point -- its underside. Even this weak spot is more resilient than the Coelacanth's front armor.
The zrbite power source allows the cannon to fire 100 rounds per battle, and fully recharges itself out of combat. While not as powerful or as accurate, the weapon's main advantage over the man portable Sonic Cannon is that it can fire three Snap Shots per turn and still retain some TUs that can be used for short moves. The Aimed Shot is unfortunately relatively costly for its low accuracy gain. Like all sonic weapons, it lacks autofire capability.
Like all tanks, its larger size precludes it from moving into confined spaces. However, its sonic weapon and generous ammunition supply allow it to blast open pathways when required.
The research requirements of the tank mean that, by the time the displacer becomes available, commanders will typically have access to high-tech armor and alien weapons. Despite this, the Displacer is a veritable tank in the battlefield that aquanauts can rally behind. It provides great speed, flight on land, moderately heavy firepower, does not need rest, has Tentaculat zombification immunity, and good all-round protection that is superior to Magnetic Ion Armor. While it certainly performs better with aquanaut support, it is capable of holding its own in battle.
This weapons system is used in Terror from the Deep. In UFO: Enemy Unknown, the Hovertank/Plasma is the equivalent.

Notes
- The sonic beam on the Displacer/Sonic is
barely more powerful thanthe same as the Gauss on the Coelacanth/Gauss (discounting damage type resistances). - The in-game information on the power of the weapon is incorrect when referencing the actual code. The true damage set in the executable is the same as the Coelacanth/Gauss, which is 110.Tycho
The sonic beam is exactly equal in power to the Sonic Cannon, unlike the slightly weaker Tank/Plasma vs Heavy Plasma in Enemy Unknown.Furthermore, the severe nerf to the Sonic Cannon's TU use means even a stationary sniper will often only be able to get 1 snapshot off, whereas the Displacer/Sonic can occasionally get 3 shots off.- When on land, the displacer, like all flying units, can avoid physical attacks from Calcinites by staying above ground level.
- Unlike the Magnetic Ion Armor, displacers can fly anywhere.
